Our Story

The CGR Story started in 1966 in Wales

  • It was early morning on Friday 21 Oct 1966, following several days of heavy rain.
  • There were approximately 2 million of cubic metres of unwanted coal mining debris creating huge piles or ‘tips’.
  • Several of these ‘tips’ had been built up directly over underground springs.
  • At the base of one of these tips was the Pantglas Junior School, Aberfan, South Wales.
  • At 9.15 that day, more than 110,000 cubic metres of water saturated thick mud suffocated the school.

116 children and 28 adults lost their lives

The founder of CGR, who was a teenager and living close by at the time, vowed he would never forget the heartache he felt and pledged that one day he would do his bit to prevent this from ever happening again.

Today CGR Foundation is used all over the world to:

  • Save lives.
  • Save the environment.
  • Save financial failure.
